Manchester City face arguably their biggest test of the season so far as they come up against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals.
City will take on the German champions, who've recently appointed Thomas Tuchel as manager, knowing that a win at the Etihad Stadium would put them in an ideal position to progress to the next round. City will look to the likes of Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish and Kevin de Bruyne to carry fine performances from the weekend into the game tomorrow night, to break down a strong Bayern Munich defence.
Bayern have a lot of firepower themselves, boasting the likes of Jamal Musiala, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, Alphonso Davies, Sadio Mane and Thomas Muller as options that could harm the Blues.
As well as this, it'll be the chance to see former City favourite Leroy Sane, and current loanee Joao Cancelo return to Manchester, after they both fell out of favour with Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff during their time at the club.
Here is how we think the Blues will line up for this crucial Champions League tie:
It would be a big surprise, even by Guardiola's standards, to not play Ederson in goal.
Although Guardiola commented before the game as to how Kyle Walker's pace may be useful against the likes of Mane, Sane, Musiala and Coman, we think Guardiola will stick to his most recent preferred back 4, which consists of John Stones playing at right back dropping into midfield, Manuel Akanji and Ruben Dias at centre back, and Nathan Ake at left back, dropping into the left hand side of a back 3 when City are in possession.
It would be as big as surprise as not starting Ederson if Rodri weren't to start at the base of midfield, where he has been so influential to City's success this season. Kevin de Bruyne should occupy the right sided 8 position, whereas it is a 2 way battle between Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva for the left sided 8 position. Due to his technical excellence and current form, club captain Ilkay Gundogan edges it.
We do still have room for Bernardo Silva in this predicted lineup, as his versatility means he can play almost anywhere. In this case, he will be starting on the right wing, due to an under par performance from Riyad Mahrez in the last game, and a current lack of options on the wing. Jack Grealish is in the best form of his City career at the moment, so expect to see him start on the other flank.
Erling Haaland will start as the main centre forward for City. He has an excellent scoring record against Bayern Munich, and, with an astonishing 10 goals in his last 3 games, he is certainly going to cause a threat to Bayern's solid defence, with his speed, movement and lethal finishing.
This leaves Stefan Ortega Moreno, Scott Carson, Rico Lewis, Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, Sergio Gomez, Kalvin Phillips, Maximo Perrone, Riyad Mahrez, Cole Palmer and Julian Alvarez on the bench for City, with it being a larger bench than normal for the continental cup competitions.
CMON CITY!!!
